This Weeks One To Watch: Marley

If I had to sum this film up in one word, I’d say it was ‘interesting’. I say that because I found out a lot of new things about Bob Marley’s life that I never know before. Did you know that his late mother Cedella fell pregnant with him when she was 16 and his English father was 60? I know, that was a shocker to me too. But the most ‘interesting’ thing about this film was that it was produced by Ziggy Marley. It starred Bob’s daughter Cedella Marley but none of his other 11 children. The fact that Julian, Stephen, Rohan and especially Damian weren’t in the film was a big disappointment in my opinion.

Other than that, the film does what it says on the tin. It focuses on Bob Marley’s musical career, the struggles he faced being mixed race in Jamaicia, the Rastafarian movement right through to his death. It is a great film that will undoubtedly move you in some way or another…as well as make your ass numb after sitting down for 2.5 hours. Marley is certificate 15 and will be out in cinemas across the UK on Friday.

The Iron Lady Review

So, I know a lot of you guys wanted me to do more reviews in 2012 so here you go! Don’t say I don’t do anything for ya!

There is only one film that is getting all of the attention this week and that is The Iron Lady. I was lucky enough to watch the biographical film before Christmas (I felt pretty special about that). The amazing Meryl Streep plays Margaret Thatcher and if there is one thing I can guarantee you if you do go and watch this film, is that Meryl is bloody brilliant. If the woman doesn’t win an Oscar for her role, well…erm, someone needs to get their head tested. She was completely on point. She captured the look and sound of Margaret Thatcher as well as the lady’s mind and soul – now that’s what you call a great actress.

The film itself focused on the price that Margret Thatcher paid for power. It looked at her relationship with her kids (that pretty much doesn’t exists), her relationship with her late husband and her becoming Prime Minister. I’d sum this film up as being like marmite, some people are going to love it (like me) whereas others who are still very much angry with the mess that she made when she was in power are going to hate it. But if I were you, I’d go and watch it and make up your own mind because there’s nothing worse than when the Oscars come around and everyone’s talking about a film that you haven’t seen.

GEEK FACT: Meryl Streep originally applied to Law School but slept in on the morning of her interview and took it as a sign that she was destined for other things.

This Weeks One To Watch: The Help

I finally got a chance to watch The Help a few weeks ago and I’m not going to beat around the bush, this film is flippin amazing! I can honestly say that it is even better than what I expected it to be! Based on the novel written by Kathryn Stockett, it is a heart wrenching story about Skeeter (played by Emma Stone) who during the civil rights movement of the 1960′s decides to write a book detailing the African American Maid’s point of view on the White families they work for.

Anyone that reads this blog on a regular basis knows how much I love Emma Stone. I thought she rocked in Easy A but this girl just keeps on getting better and better. This film will make you laugh (thanks to Octavia Spencer‘s sassy ways), cry (thanks to Viola Davis) and overall make you appreciate life. If you’re a fan of films liked The Color Purple and The Secret Life of Bees you will love this.

The Help is out across the UK on Friday!

GEEK FACT: Jessica Chastain, a vegan, ate soy ice cream melted in the microwave to gain weight for the role of Celia Foote.

This Weeks One To Watch: 30 Minutes Or Less

This film is about Nick (Jesse Eisenberg) a pizza delivery driver who has trouble completing the “30 Minutes or Less” policy when he delivers his pizza’s. But there are two customers that don’t care about their free pizza’s and that’s Dwayne (Danny McBride) and Travis (Nick Swardson). They both kidnap Nick, attach a bomb to his chest and order him to rob a bank but it’s never as simple as it sounds. Expect to see monkey masks, toy guns, lots of car chases, the super funny Michael Peña and Aziz Ansari freaking out…a lot!.

“30 Minutes or Less” is exactly what it says on the tin, it’s an action packed comedy that will have you in stitches and I loved every second of it. So, if you love Jesse Eisenberg and you want to see Aziz in his first leading roll (I’m so proud), I suggest you go and see this one!.

GEEK FACT: Aziz Ansari makes a small cameo appearance in Kanye and Jay-Z’s “Otis” video.
